Picture Jitter | |
Display Text | Picture Jitter |
Description | "Picture Jitter" is the shaking of the image due to unintended, unnatural camera movement or image repositioning. In archival film footage, it may be the result of film perfs not being properly aligned with film scanner sprockets/pins. |
Impact | Picture Jitter draws unwanted attention to the technical aspects of the production process and can be distracting the member experience. |
Severity Assessment Guidance | |
FYI | Jitter cannot be definitively determined to be creatively intended or related to simulated “film” footage or actual archival footage but is minor and does not overly distract from the main focus of action. |
Issue | Jitter is clearly due to a re-positioning edit mid-scene. Jitter is overly distracting and is inconsistent with surrounding/similar shots. |

How to Prevent |
Make sure you are working with the highest quality scan/restoration of archival material or segments shot on film. Review any repositioned shots for unintended image shifting. |
How to Fix | Apply stabilization to minimize jitter. Make sure that any stabilization applied does not induce visible matte edges or additional artifacts. |
