Luminance Peaks | |
Display Text | Luminance Peaks |
Description | "Luminance Peaks" can be used to describe measured luminance levels either exceeding legal limits or being clipped lower than expected based on the scene content. |
Impact | Luminance Peaks may negatively impact the member experience when images are so bright or dark that detail is lost. High or low luminance peaks may also indicate a Full/Legal range conversion issue. |

Issue | Luminance peaks exceed legal limits or appear low based on scene content. |

How to Prevent |
Monitor luminance levels using waveform and/or histogram scopes. For HDR content, make sure to select the “mastering” monitor settings applicable to the reference HDR monitor being used for grading. Avoid grading on a reference HDR monitor with a lower peak brightness capability than the intended maximum nit luminance level. Consider analyzing MaxFALL/MaxCLL for potential inconsistencies. |
How to Fix |
For low luminance peaks, confirm if it is creative intent. Otherwise, adjust luminance to peak at intended levels. For high luminance peaks/levels exceeding legal limits in SDR content, luminance must be adjusted to bring it within legal limits (700mV). This is most likely a Full/Legal range conversion issue. For high luminance peaks in HDR content, confirm if it is creative intent. Otherwise, it may require updating the “mastering” monitor settings to match the reference HDR monitor used for grading and reanalyzing to generate new L1 Dolby Vision Metadata. |
