This article summarizes the edits made to the Netflix timed text style guides during this update cycle.

Please refer to the change logs on each of the TTSGs for more details on each edit. Languages are listed below and each TTSG is linked out.

As always, please follow these versions of the TTSGs for all new projects going forward (i.e. all new film projects and all new seasons starting from episode one).

 

Arabic

  • Sections 24 and 25 have been clarified as only applying to Arabic-language content
  • Punctuation rules have been consolidated into the punctuation section
  • Some rules from the foreign language section have moved into the opening section covering Arabic language style
  • The diacritics section has been edited down to remove some copy relating to dammah, new examples have been added
  • The special instructions section has been edited to confirm use of transliteration when brand names or the names of famous people appear
  • The SDH section has been expanded covering onomatopoeias
  • A new section has been added: Special Considerations for FNs in Arabic Content

Danish

  • Points have been added to cover redundant FNs, italics for game titles and allowing italics for emphasis in certain situations
  • The line treatment and repetitions sections have been revised
  • A point about colon use in quotations has been added
  • The songs section has been renamed as "Songs and Poetry"
  • Please refer to the change log for more details

Filipino

  • Under "special instructions", further edits have been made to the bullets and examples covering capitalization rules for family titles, kinship names and other honorifics
  • Please refer to the change log for more details

Hungarian

  • The 2-second pause rule under continuity has been adapted
  • The quotations section now uses the word "guillemet" instead of "single quotation marks" and a new Hungarian-language example has been added
  • Further exceptions and detail about interjections has been included under "special instructions" and the SDH section has been edited to include a point about italicizing music notes

Italian

  • The Italian TTSG has now been divided into section I. Italian subtitles and II. Italian SDH
  • The Italian SDH section has been overhauled and expanded
  • Please refer to the change log for more details

Japanese

  • The SDH/songs section has been edited to confirm that music notes and the lyrics they are associated with both need to be italicized
  • The SDH/speaker IDs section has been edited to remove the rule about not italicizing speaker IDs or sound labels
  • The rubies sections have been edited to allow more room for good judgement to be applied when considering when and where to include rubies

Norwegian

  • Edits have been made to the titles and abbreviations section, allowing more flexibility and providing more clarity
  • Points have been added to cover redundant FNs, italics for game titles, writing numbers above 12
  • The line treatment and repetitions sections have been revised
  • The quotations section now contains a new localized example
  • A minor capitalization change has been made to the bullet point covering narrator IDs in the SDH section

Romanian

  • Several sections have had clarifications and new details added to the dual speaker section, line treatment, use of periods in long numbers, approach to poetry and how to handle bleeped content
  • The approach to translating name captions in documentaries/unscripted has been clarified
  • The on-screen text section now confirms that FNs should not be italicized
  • The italics section now clarifies further use cases for their use as well as detail covering italics in trailers
  • The punctuation section has been rewritten and expanded

Spanish

  • The words "show" and "ballet" have been added as further examples of the kinds of foreign or loan words which do not need to be italicized
  • The SDH section has further detail covering the handling of dubbed content, foreign dialogue, the identification of songs when lyrics are included, the handling of songs over end credits and new examples added under "speaker IDs / sound effects"

Thai

  • The acronym section has been edited for clarity
