Error Code:

TimedText-OverlappingRenderedText (Rendering tools have identified two caption lines that have overlapping display regions)

Error Message:

After applying fonts, styling, and positioning attributes, rendering tools have identified overlapping display regions for captions. This may not be representative of all Netflix display platforms. Region definitions should be verified, if possible, before overriding. [timecode1: text1, timecode2: text2]

Definition:

Our timed text rendering engine, which considers more complex text attributes like fonts, styling, and positioning, has identified the presence of overlapping display regions, which may result in text overlap. This is not to be confused with the non-overridable Automated QC error TimedText-OverlappingText, which validates when more than one text event shares the same region coordinates (tts:origin & tts:extent) with overlapping timecodes.

This inspection provides a more robust analysis of overlapping display regions based on additional text characteristics to catch a broader set of overlapping text issues; however, overlapping text may not always be visibly present.

Solution:

We recommend reviewing the affected events using an imsc.js text renderer (e.g. https://www.sandflow.com/imsc1_1/, https://www.ooona.net/solutions/ttml-renderer/)

If the affected events visibly overlap, make the necessary updates to the region coordinates and/or display timecodes to avoid overlap. See What does a properly formatted TTML file look like? for an example of a TTML file with multiple regions. These are set within the <layout> block.

If no visible overlap is present, you may proceed with overriding the error.
