What is Originator Studio?
The Netflix authoring tool for Dialogue transcription/translation: Your job is to provide the English reference dialogue for dub script localization.
- Dialogue Lists (DL)
- Pivot Language Dialogue Lists (PLDL)
- Both will be referred to as PL/DL in this guide.
The overall workflow: Author > Proofread > QC (Quality Control)
Access
You must have the Dialogue List Author or Proofreader roles. You'll also get access to the Terminology tool for Key Names and Phrases (KNP) for your task.

Email Notification
Once you are assigned a project, you will get an email notification and link to your task.
Linguist Dashboard
- To keep track of and access all of your tasks, bookmark the Linguist Dashboard.
- To open a task = 3-dot menu → Open in → Originator Studio.

Starting a Task
To begin your task, select Start (top-right)
Authoring Task View
A task is made of 4 parts:
- Info and Navigation,
- Video Player
- Events
- Timeline
The image below reflects a Dialogue List (DL). A Pivot Language Dialogue List (PLDL) has the same layout, but the events panel will have 2 text fields: Transcription + Translation.

In the following section, each part of the tool is displayed and labeled with letters. The tables below it explain the corresponding feature and purpose.

Info and Navigation
Task information and navigation give you a general overview of the task and helpful resources.

| A | Task Info | Title info and metadata |
| B | Start/Done | Press to Start to begin and “Done” to submit. |
| C | Save | The project is auto-saved every 5 seconds. Select this icon to manually save. |
| D | References | If available, download the show guide and open Terminology for KNPs. |
| E | Characters | Add, edit, remove speakers. If a shooting script is available, characters might already be created for you. |
| F | Support | Learning Resources and Support Ticket Submission |
| G | Settings | Keyboard Shortcuts and Settings |
⚙️ Settings
Originator Studio navigation relies heavily on keyboard shortcuts and settings. Select the Settings wheel at the top right of the page to reference and adjust shortcuts and general settings.

Use the search bar (top-right) to find specific shortcuts
Customize, clear or reset to default setting

General
Select General (second tab) to customize your settings for optimal use.

Video Player
Use the Video player to review the latest video cut while editing events.

| I | (Un)Mute | Volume control. Click the icon to (un)mute. |
| J | Loop | Play an event repeatedly. |

Events
For some languages, dialogue events are pre-filled using speech recognition. Check that the timing and text are correct, and assign characters. For PLDL, use/edit the translation ideas when they make sense.

Timeline
Use the timeline to sync events to audio waveforms. Select and drag events to move or retime.

| T | Scroll/Zoom | Zoom in/out on the waveform or use your mouse (pad) to move timeline. |
| U | Shot Change | Visual markers for scene shifts. |
| V | Playhead | Visual marker for current timecode |
View characters in their own tracks: Settings → General → Timeline → Separate timeline by character |
Proofreading View
The task looks the same for Proofreading, except you'll see the original script as a reference and when you make changes in your script:
- Pink highlights for all changes
Select “Show Edits” to view your previous changes.
Help and Feedback
Select the Support Menu to access learning resources, see feature updates, submit a ticket for (technical assistance), or submit feedback on the tool.
