What is Originator Studio?

The Netflix Authoring Tool for Dialogue Transcription/Translation: Your job is to provide quality control to maintain the highest standards for PL/DL creation. The PL/DL (Pivot Language / Dialogue List) is used by other language teams in the dubbing process. For detailed expectations and task steps, refer to the DL & PLDL QC Scope Of Work.

The overall workflow: Author > Proofread > QC (Quality Control)

 

Access

You must have the Fullscript QCer role to access the tool.  

To get access to Originator Studio, reach out to your Project Manager. 

 

Email Notification

Once you are assigned a project, you will get an email notification and link to your task.

 

Linguist Dashboard

  • To keep track of and access all of your tasks, bookmark the Linguist Dashboard. 
  • You can start working on a task when it says Ready to QC

  • To open a task = 3-dot menu → Open in → Originator Studio

Starting a Task

To begin your task, select Start (top-right)

QC Task View 

A task is made of 4 parts:

  1. Info and Navigation,
  2. Video Player
  3. Events
  4. Timeline

The image below reflects a Dialogue List (DL). A Pivot Language Dialogue List (PLDL) has the same layout, but the events panel will have 2 text fields: Transcription + Translation. 

 

Your Workspace

In the following section, each part of the tool is displayed and labeled with letters. The tables below it explain the corresponding feature and purpose.

Info and Navigation

Gives you a general overview of the task and helpful resources.

Letter Feature Purpose
A Task Info Title info and metadata
B Start/Done Press to Start to begin and “Done” to submit.
C Save The project is auto-saved every 5 seconds. Select this icon to manually save.
D References  If available, download the show guide and open Terminology for KNPs.
E Characters Add, edit, remove speakers. If a shooting script is available, characters might already be created for you.
F Support Learning Resources and Support Ticket Submission
G Settings Keyboard Shortcuts and Settings

 

⚙️ Settings

Originator Studio navigation relies heavily on keyboard shortcuts and settings. Select the Settings wheel at the top right of the page to reference and adjust shortcuts and general settings.

General

Video Player

Use the Video player to review the latest video cut while QCing events

Letter Feature Purpose
H Cut Selector Pick a video version to compare.
I (Un)Mute Volume control. Click the icon to (un)mute.
J Loop Play an event repeatedly.
K Audio Selector
  • Available subtitles and audio. 
  • View dialogue events on screen. 
  • Switch between Transcript and Translation for PLDL.
L Open in Second Tab For working on 2 screens (1 window for video and 1 window for editing)
M Full Screen Preview full-screen mode

 

 

Events

During QC, focus on the elements that affect downstream dubbing teams:

  • Character tagging: Assign each line correctly.

  • Annotations: Keep notes short and clear.

  • Dialogue accuracy: Transcribe all audible dialogue and on-screen text precisely.

Letter Feature Purpose
N Filters Filter events by tags, character names, errors, etc.
O Display Customize event display for PLDL
P Find and Replace Search text (including annotations) and Replace (all)
Q Actions Jump to, select event ranges, or import/export the script
R Play from Start Manual replay
S Event Menu
  • Split or merge events
  • Insert or Delete events

 

Assistive Features

Work faster and stay consistent while you work.

Feature What it Helps With  
Spellcheck

Turn on spellcheck by selecting the "A" icon.

Select highlighted words to see spelling or grammar suggestions.

Select Ignore All to ignore this suggestion for the rest of this task

Spellcheck languages: sv,ja,fr,es,de,it,nl,nl-BE,en,en-GB,en-AU,en-CA,en-NZ,en-ZA,pt,pt-BR,ro,el,pl,da

  2. Use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+A (mac) or Alt+A (pc)

Timeline

Use the timeline to sync events to audio waveforms. Select and drag events to move or retime.

Letter Feature Purpose
T Scroll/Zoom Zoom in/out on the waveform or use your mouse (pad) to move timeline.
U Shot Change Visual markers for scene shifts.
V Playhead Visual marker for current timecode

 

Editing Events

When you make changes to the dialogue events:

  • Changes are highlighted in pink
  • Toggle Show Edits to view your changes

 

QC Tags

While marking QC errors or issues, add:

A. QC Error (dropdown selection)

B. QC Description (manual notes)

 

To Do

Please Reference when tagging events:

  • QC Reason is required. You will not be able to submit the task until you provide a reason.
  • QC Description is recommended.
