Source Materials Provided by Netflix

Source Request

  • Assigned with a delivery date via Source Management. The dubbing fulfillment partner should not expect any changes to the source materials after assignment.
  • For off-service supplementals, a Source Request will not be assigned. All deliveries and assets will be managed via VanDam.

Scripting assets

  • In some (but not all) cases, an Edit Decision List, English Dialog List or English Pivot Language List will be provided.
  • In the event no scripting assets are available, this will be communicated upon kick-off and an additional fee will be paid to accommodate this additional work. Please check with your Netflix point of contract prior to commencing with script creation.

Print Master Audio

  • The final, original language mix.
  • Please use this asset for the mixing of any Voice Over or Lector trailers.
  • For Product Supplementals, this asset will be available for download via Source Management source requests. For off-service supplementals, this will be made available for download via VanDam.

Music & Effects (M&E) Audio

  • Please note: in some cases a fully-filled M&E will not be available to download, and instead DME splits or OMF/AAF files will be provided with which to create the finished trailer. If you believe that the provided materials are insufficient for the creation of the trailer, please contact your Netflix Representative for further guidance.
  • Exception: For documentaries and unscripted titles, a Mix Minus Narration may be provided. This will be communicated via your Netflix dubbing contact at the point of project kick-off.
  • For Product Supplementals, this asset will be available for download via Source Management source requests. For off-service supplementals, this will be made available for download via VanDam.

Final Proxy

  • Available ingest of the final ProRes or IMF files from post-production.
  • For Product Supplementals, this asset will be available for download via Source Management source requests. For off-service supplementals, this will be made available for download via VanDam.
  • All secondary language assets must be conformed to the final proxy prior to delivery.

Scope of Work for Dubbing Fulfillment Partners

Project Setup

  • Adhere to all Netflix Technical Specifications, Delivery Specifications, and Style-Guide Documentation, as found within Dubbed Audio Resources.
  • Dubbing studios are required to utilize Netflix’s suite of tools and adhere to the requirements of those tools, including but not limited to the following:
    • Source Management - The Netflix Partner Portal for managing Source Requests, facilitating delivery, downloading source materials, and quality control reporting.
    • Content Hub - Netflix’s digital archive and production asset hub.
    • KNP Tool - Key Names and Phrases tool -- Netflix’s interface and database for streamlining the process of creating and maintaining glossaries and consistency sheets.
    • Starship - Netflix’s centralized platform for partner onboarding and tool access.
    • Grand Bazaar - Netflix’s proprietary project bidding platform.
  • In the event of any origination being required:
    • The same translator/adapter as the season/feature should be utilized here, if possible.
    • The same voice talent as used for the long form version should be used. Any actor availability issues or otherwise must be communicated to your Netflix dubbing contact.
  • All fulfillment partners subcontracting work to other companies must disclose all sub-assignees via the Source Management subcontracting feature.
    • All dubbing studios must record their target language within territory. Any exceptions must be communicated to your Netflix representative prior to Source Management source request assignment.
    • When subcontracting to another dub studio for a Netflix project, you must subcontract to a dubbing studio within the Netflix Post Partner Program (NP3) or otherwise approved by Netflix.
  • Netflix requires all invoices to include the purchase order (PO) number in order to be paid.To receive a purchase order from Netflix for localization services, your company must submit an estimate to a bid request and be hired within Grand Bazaar. Your company will be unable to submit invoices until this procedure is performed, and the estimate is approved by your Netflix dubbing contact. More information on this process can be found in Localization Billing Instructions - Full-Length Content.
    • Purchase order number is assigned at the start of work when dubbing partner submits their HIRED bid (estimated cost).
    • As soon as possible after delivery of the main supplemental asset, the dubbing partner submits final costs with line item details within Grand Bazaar. The invoice with the purchase order number can only be sent to Netflix once the final costs are approved within Grand Bazaar.
    • Purchase orders are requested through Grand Bazaar in a 2-step process:
    • Within any initial bid estimate or final cost breakdown, all costs for star talent and designated voices must be individually itemized (if they are paid beyond standard dubbing rates). All song dubbing costs must be individually itemized by song.
    • Netflix understands that costs may change from the initial estimate throughout the dubbing process. The estimate must be updated as costs are accrued and submitted to Grand Bazaar and your Netflix dubbing contact for approval.
    • Detailed breakdown of all final, itemized costs must be provided to Grand Bazaar as soon as possible after final delivery, to include but not limited to the following: Dub talent fees (and social charges if applicable in your territory); translator fees (and social charges if applicable in your territory); adaptor fees (and social charges if applicable in your territory); artistic director fees (and social charges if applicable in your territory); buyouts; recording studio and engineer costs; editing costs; administration costs; mixing costs (if you are commissioned to create the language mix), pickup recording sessions, etc.
    • The total cost amount of the invoice must equal the purchase order amount.
  • Please continue to refer to the long-form Show Guide for direction (if a Show Guide is available). If available, the Show Guide can be downloaded via the Source Management source requests. If no Show Guide is available, confirm with Netflix/Production Company for inclusion and translation of songs and other specific style and creative choices (e.g. foreign dialogue treatment).

Dubbing Production

  • For Product supplementals, please review source assets within 2 business days of receipt (plus one business day for each additional asset of the same type received at once) and confirm all source materials received are usable. Source Management must be updated with appropriate Materials Status and Service Type after review is complete. The Materials Status and Acceptance workflow does not apply to Off-Service Supplementals.
  • The long-form Key Names & Phrases glossary (KNP) terms should be adhered to in the case of any origination. If a change is required to a locked term for the purposes of the supplemental, please contact your Netflix dubbing contact and communicate the rationale for the change.
  • Upon acceptance (see here for details) of source materials (M&E, Print Master, English script, final picture), adaptation, editing, any additional recording, mix and delivery to Source Management should be completed within 5 business days for lip-sync dubbing, voiceover and lector. The Materials Status and Acceptance workflow does not apply to Off-Service Supplementals.
  • Actor availability issues or any other delays must be communicated to your Netflix dubbing contact.
  • If the above timeline cannot be met for a specific project for any reason, you must notify your Netflix dubbing contact as soon as possible.
  • Estimated Delivery Dates within Source Management must be accurately maintained throughout the lifecycle of the project, including assets marked for redelivery.

Final Delivery

  • All commissioned Product supplemental assets must be delivered to Source Management and adhere to all Netflix Technical Specifications, Delivery Specifications, and Style-Guide Documentation, as found under Branded Delivery Specifications.
  • All commissioned Off-Service supplemental assets must be delivered as a Dialogue Edit to VanDam. Please ensure you review the Delivering Dubbed Dialogue for Trailers for the most up-to-date instructions regarding delivery.
  • If commissioned to create forced narrative subtitle files, these assets must be delivered to Source Management no later than two business days from delivery of the dubbed audio unless otherwise indicated.
  • In the event of a redelivery, the dubbing partner should redeliver the service assets no later than two days after receipt of this request. Estimated Delivery Dates within Source Management must be accurately maintained for all redelivery requests (if applicable).
